In
Lighter than Air, I wanted to contrast the
solidity of etched lines with the light,
floating quality of feathers. First I wiped the
etching plate; next I inked the feathers and
offset their images onto the plate, and finally
printed the image on the paper. For me, the
border symbolizes ether, the magical substance
that holds everything together, while the
feathers are our freedom that comes from
creativity, allows us to float as if we are
lighter than air and unbinds us from the
heaviness of the everyday world.
